FREEPORT — Midcoast Humane plans to bring back its annual Save a Stray 5K fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 19.
The event raises money for the nearly 3,500 animals cared for by Midcoast Humane each year.
Runners, walkers, and festival attendees are encouraged to bring their canine friends, who must be on leash at all times.
The 5K begins 8 a.m. at the starting line at 23 Depot St. next to the Boat, Bike & Ski store. The one-mile, dog-friendly walk will circle the L.L. Bean campus and leaves from the Boat, Bike & Ski store at 9 a.m.
Save a Stray registrants and members of the public can compete in Midcoast Humane’s Canine Contests, which begin at 9:30 a.m. on the stage in Discovery Park at 18 Morse St. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of fastest ice cream eater, best trick, musical chairs and best pet/owner look-alike for prizes.
The Dog Days of August festival will follow the contests and feature food trucks, face painting, ask-the-trainer and more.
Registration for the walk and/or 5K is $35 per person until Wednesday, Aug. 16 at midnight. Day-of registration for the 5K will be available for $40, starting at 6:30 a.m. at the starting line.
The first 200 registrants are guaranteed to receive a commemorative 2023 Save a Stray T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female athlete in eight different age groups.
