BASEBALL
The Hartford Yard Goats scored the go-ahead run on an error in the top of the 10th inning, and the Portland Sea Dogs ended a 1-5 homestead with a 4-3 loss Sunday in an Eastern League game at Hadlock Field.
It was the third extra-inning loss of the series for the Sea Dogs, who had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the 10th, but Brainer Bonaci was doubled off third base for the final out after a line drive to third by Nick Yorke.
Portland tied the game with two runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Tyler McDonough and an RBI double by Blaze Jordan. Elih Marrero drove in the other run with a second-inning double.
Wikelman Gonzales struck out eight and allowed seven hits and three runs – two earned – in 5 2/3 innings. Sea Dogs relievers Alex Hoppe, Luis Guerrero and Wyatt Olds combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings.
TENNIS
NATIONAL BANK OPEN: Jessica Pegula routed Liudmila Samsonova 6-1, 6-0 in Montreal for her third career WTA Tour victory.
Pegula, the 29-year-old American seeded fourth, topped Samsonova after the 15th-seeded Russian beat third-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 earlier Sunday in a rain-delayed semifinal.
• Jannik Sinner won his first ATP Masters 1000 title, beating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1 in National Bank Open men’s final in Toronto.
Sinner, the No. 7 seed, broke de Minaur’s serve five times in the 90-minute match.
FOOTBALL
NFL: The Atlanta Falcons waived 2022 starting linebacker Mykal Walker in a surprise move.
Walker started and had four tackles in the Falcons’ 19-3 preseason win at Miami on Friday night. Falcons Coach Arthur Smith did not play most of his projected starters against the Dolphins.
• Derek Carr threw a touchdown pass in his New Orleans preseason debut and rookie Blake Grupe kicked a 31-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Saints to a 26-24 victory over the visiting Kansas City Chiefs.
Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes started but took just five snaps before Kansas City’s first drive ended with a failed fourth-and-1 play.
• Third-string rookie Aidan O’Connell passed for 141 yards and a touchdown in a highly efficient performance, and the Las Vegas Raiders beat the visiting San Francisco 49ers, 34-7.
O’Connell, a fourth-round draft pick out of Purdue, played the first three quarters and completed 15 of 18 passes. He outplayed his 49ers counterparts, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold, who are competing to back up starter Brock Purdy.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Breanna Stewart scored 30 of her 42 points in the first half to help the visiting New York Liberty beat the Indiana Fever, 100-89, and set a franchise record for wins in a season.
New York (24-6) has won six games in a row and 10 of its last 11.
Stewart, who scored 45 points in a 90-73 win over the Fever on May 21 and 43 against the Phoenix Mercury on July 5, became the first player in WNBA history to score at least 40 points three times in the same season. She joins Diana Taurasi (four times) and Maya Moore (three) as the only players to top the 40-point plateau three times in their career.
• Brittney Sykes scored a season-high 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting to help the Washington Mystics win at home against the Chicago Sky, 83-76.
• Jewell Loyd scored 24 points, Ezi Magbegor added 17, and the Seattle Storm nearly blew a 16-point halftime lead before they pulled away for an 81-71 win over the visiting Phoenix Mercury.
WORLD CUP: Jalen Brunson was 9 for 9 from the field on the way to a team-best 21 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. added 14, and the U.S. pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Spain 98-88 in Malaga, Spain, in a pre-World Cup exhibition between tournament favorites.
Spain is the No. 1-ranked team in the world according to FIBA; the U.S. is No. 2.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Chelsea came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw at home against Liverpool in a Premier League opener that showed the Blues have already made progress under their new manager, Mauricio Pochettino.
In the marquee matchup of the Premier League’s opening round, Luis Diaz put Liverpool ahead after a lightning counterattack in the 18th minute, but defender Axel Disasi marked his Chelsea debut by scoring the equalizer from close range in the 37th.
• Tottenham began life without Harry Kane with an entertaining 2-2 draw at Brentford.
FRANCE: Tensions between Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain eased a little after the star striker was allowed to return to training following “constructive and positive talks” between the two parties.
Mbappe watched from the stands on Saturday night as PSG drew 0-0 at home against Lorient. He wants to play this season and leave for free when his contract runs out, but PSG wants to sell him.
• Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar has reportedly agreed a two-year deal to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
France’s leading sports daily, L’Equipe, said on its website that the Brazilian forward will receive a total of 160 million euros ($175 million) over two seasons. No details were given as to how much the transfer fee would be.
ITALY: National team coach Roberto Mancini surprisingly resigned, ending an up-and-down tenure with the national team that included a European Championship title in 2021 but also a failed qualification for last year’s World Cup.
