SKOWHEGAN — JMG, in partnership with Redington Fairview Hospital, Somerset Career & Technical Center, and Western Maine Area Health Education Center, has announced the second annual Somerset Scrub Club.

This transformative four-day camp is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 7-10. It is aimed at introducing students to careers in healthcare. This career exploration opportunity is open to students entering grades eight through 12.

The camp will be held at Skowhegan Area High School, 61 Academy Circle.

Throughout the four days of the club, participating students will engage in hands-on activities, interactive workshops and seminars led by experienced healthcare professionals in careers that include athletic trainer, certified nursing assistant, dentist, medical assistant, emergency medical technician, phlebotomist and registered nurse, according to a news release from Katie Wood, regional director at JMG.

Students will travel to Kennebec Valley Community College and Redington-Fairview General Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 8, to learn more about the programs and opportunities offered. On Aug. 11, students will hear from staff at Lifeflight of Maine, which will land a helicopter, weather permitting.

In addition to hands-on activities, students will participate in demonstrations, which include casting, suturing, first aid, and CPR. All students will receive American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR and First Aid certification.

By combining practical learning with expert guidance, Somerset Scrub Club seeks to ignite passion and foster an enduring interest in healthcare careers among students.
