I just learned that the Maine Legislature has repealed the Property Tax Stabilization Act that had been enacted last year to protect residents who are senior citizens from being taxed out of our homes by the ever-increasing tax burden (“Budget deal would replace popular senior property tax program,” June 28).
Senior citizens worked all of our lives, raised our families and have paid taxes all of our lives. Many of us are handicapped and are living on Social Security and any meager savings we were able to put away. We have health care expenses as well. We bought our homes when property prices were much lower than the value we are now taxed on.
We are a poor and aging state that has always answered the call to service for our country but we are being destroyed by inflation and taxation.
