The Central Maine Garden Club plans to host a garden tour from 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, July 18 in the Redington Museum Garden, 62 Silver St. in Waterville.

The rain date is Wednesday, July 19.

Nestled in the Redington Museum’s yard sits the native garden, a return to the past in hopes in saving the future. The 50 or so native plants offer food and shelter to insects and wildlife. This plant community contains pollinators that are the foundation of our food cycle and a return of beneficial insects.

The Central Maine Garden Club created the garden in 2008. It used to be in full sun, but gradually trees grew shading the plants and inhibiting its growth. In 2019 a renovation of the garden was initiated; a grant was submitted to the Oak Grove Foundation and funding was secured. The club’s energies then focused on how native plants help the environment.

The work began with members of the club having work parties to clean, weed and add native perennials. These plants have evolved with climate changes over time.
