A Norway man has been charged after police found his wife’s body in the driveway of the couple’s home.
Andrew St. George, 61, faces a murder charge in the death of Barbara St. George, 60, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Saturday.
Shortly after noon Friday, Norway police received a disturbance complaint related to the couple’s Greenwood Road property.
Officers at the scene found a deceased woman in the driveway, and said Andrew St. George had superficial injuries. He was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital, and later interviewed by state police and charged with murder.
On Saturday, the state medical examiner’s office confirmed Barbara St. George’s identity and ruled her death as a homicide, Moss said.
Andrew St. George is being held without bail at the Oxford County Jail. He will make an initial appearance in Oxford County Superior Court next week.
“This is very, very unusual. I live right next to where it happened – right on the Greenwood Road,” neighbor John Williams said. “The area where it happened basically abuts our property.”
Williams, who is CEO of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce, did not know the couple personally but said they lived in the home for several years. Neighbors along the rural road in Norway are frequently separated by as much as a quarter of a mile.
When Williams returned home from dinner Friday, law enforcement and first responders were still onsite investigating the homicide. “They were there until 2 or 3 a.m.,” he said.
“We are shocked by it and saddened by it,” Williams said. “It’s taken most people in this area by surprise, including myself.”
