AUGUSTA — Workers on Thursday cleaned up a police memorial near the State House that had been vandalized with red spray paint over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Authorities said the vandalism happened during the wee hours Saturday morning at the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which lists the names of 88 police officers killed in the line of duty. Officials have not yet identified the person or group responsible for the vandalism of the granite wall, which was covered with a tarp and police tape following the incident.
Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Thursday that Maine Capitol Police continue to investigate the vandalism and had no updates on the case.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
