AUGUSTA — Officials have not yet identified the person or group responsible for vandalizing the Maine Law Enforcement Memorial early Saturday morning.

The granite wall, which lists 88 officers who died in the line of duty, was covered with a tarp and police tape Tuesday.

Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the department is not releasing a photo of the vandalization because “what was written was specific and part of the investigation.”

The Maine Capitol Police is investigating the incident. The memorial is located on State Street, near the State House.

Moss said the Capitol Police confirmed through a video that the event happened at 3:45 a.m.

Police checked the statue at 1:30 a.m. and again at 3:50 a.m., when they found the vandalization.

Moss said the department will not release any more information as the investigation is “still active.”

Kennebec County Sheriff Ken Mason posted on Facebook that the incident is “heartbreaking, especially on Memorial Day Weekend when people are trying to honor their lost.

“We will clean up their disgusting mess and move on but the damage they did to the families who lost someone will be long-lasting, shame on them for doing this,” Mason wrote.
