OAKLAND — A Norridgewock man is facing several charges including eluding an officer and operating under the influence after police say he fled from a patrol officer Thursday and then fought with the officer as she attempted to take him into custody.
Thirty-one-year-old Christopher Abbot was arrested and transported to the Kennebec County Jail following the incident around 9:30 p.m., according to a statement posted to the Oakland Police Department’s Facebook page.
Officer Tifani Warren had spotted a motorcycle that police say Abbot was driving along Kennedy Memorial Drive at 50 mph, twice the posted speed limit, police said in the statement.
Abbot fled from Warren and then dumped the motorcycle at a ramp at Exit 127 for Interstate 95, Deputy Police Chief Rick Stubbert said Friday. He was fleeing on foot when Warren caught up with him. Abbot was combative and Warren deployed a Taser that failed to subdue him, police said. Warren fired her Taser a second time and Abbot was then incapacited.
Abbot is facing six charges stemming from the chase and altercation, and police said he previously had two warrants out for his arrest. Stubbert didn’t have additional details on those arrest warrants, such as which law enforcement agencies had been looking for him.
Abbot was no longer being held Friday at the jail.
Oakland police earlier in the week had received several complaints over a few days about a motorcycle speeding through downtown, police said in the statement. An officer on Tuesday attempted to stop a motorcyclist for speeding and the person fled on Fairfield Street. The officer discontinued the pursuit for safety and policy reasons, police said.
Stubbert said the investigation is ongoing and it was unknown whether Abbot was a source of the earlier complaints.
