The National Park Service is investigating a string of recent acts of vandalism on hiking trails at Acadia National Park.
Someone has been spray-painting red graffiti on several hiking trails, a crime that could prove dangerous if hikers are confused by the red markings on trees and rocks and wander off established trails, the park service said in a release Monday.
The vandalism has occurred on the Spring, South Ridge Penobscot, Penobscot East and Deer Brook hiking trails at the park. The red graffiti, which could be mistaken for trail blazes, has been spray-painted on trees, rocks and cairns and could confuse visitors into following a potentially dangerous hiking route. Hikers should follow the blue trail blazes instead.
Park staff and rangers are working to repair the damage. Anyone who may have information is encouraged to submit an anonymous tip or call 207-288-8791.
