WINSLOW — For the second time this week, the Winslow boys basketball team found itself in a tight battle at halftime.
And for the second time this week, the Black Raiders parlayed a strong second half into a needed victory. On Friday night, the Black Raiders beat Medomak Valley 57-44 in a key Class B North game.
Jason Reynolds led the way for Winslow (14-1), scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Andrew Poulin added 17 points, while Lucas Boucher chipped in with 13.
“It was a great win,” Reynolds said. “We knew coming in that Medomak was one of the best teams in (Class B South). We did well on the defensive end. Maybe a couple shots weren’t going in here and there for us. But we knew if we did well on the defensive end tonight, we’d get the win. That’s what we did.”
Kory Donlin led the Panthers (12-5) with 15 points.
The game was reminiscent of Winslow’s 76-50 win over Mount View on Monday, a game that was tight in the first half before Winslow kicked its offense into another gear.
On Friday, the Black Raiders traded runs in the first half with the Panthers, with Winslow heading into the locker room at halftime with a 27-24 lead.
Boucher nailed a 3-pointer to start the second half, and an eventual 8-0 run — which included two 3-pointers from Reynolds — helped the Black Raiders jump out to a 44-32 lead by the end of the third quarter.
“I’m just trying to hit some open shots, take the (offensive) pressure off Jason,” Boucher said. “It’s good.”
Winslow never looked back, with Boucher and Reynolds knocking down 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
“It’s a good win, gives us a lot of confidence before the playoffs,” Boucher said. “I think it keeps our (momentum) rolling.”
The Black Raiders also had success on defense, forcing 17 turnovers out of the Panthers.
“We knew (in the second half), we had to be more physical on the defensive end,” Reynolds said. “In the second half, we ramped up on the (offensive rebounds) and it showed.”
Finn Parmley added nine points for Medomak Valley.
It was senior night for the Black Raiders, who honored Reynolds, Boucher, Poulin, and Braden Larrabee before the game.
