HARRISON — A piece of town history is for sale.
The 1908 fieldstone Caswell Library on Main Street is being offered by local residents Averill and Christine Davis, who purchased it during a blind auction by the town in 2005 after it closed the year before and moved to a new space.
“The biggest thing was wiring,” Averill Davis said of improvements needed. “A stone building, it had no outlets. We also had to put in a new septic system and new roof, and refinish all the floors. The basement had a dirt floor, we needed to pour a concrete floor.”
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
For the past 15 years it has been home to half a dozen businesses leasing space. Most recently Maine Scale, a calibration business, and the Caswell Conservancy Center, a yoga and wellness group, have been tenants. After Maine Scale recently moved to new space, the Davises decided to fully retire and sell the building and their business, A.C. Construction.
The Davises erected a for sale sign earlier in December. The asking price is $270,000. “The building footprint is about 2,000 square feet,” he said. “It can accommodate up to three bedrooms and two and a half baths.”
