WINTHROP — Earl Smith, a college historian and author, plans to speak at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10.
The talk will be held at the Winthrop History and Heritage Center, 107 Main St.
Smith will talk about what inspired him to write his book “Downeast Genius, a History of Maine Inventors.” He also will discuss the Maine inventions that changed the world.
A native of Waterville, Smith graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a degree in journalism in 1962. He then began a 40-year career at Colby College, where he served in numerous administrative capacities including dean of students, dean of the college, secretary of the corporation and as assistant to three Colby presidents.
