AUGUSTA — The man arrested Wednesday in connection with the armed robbery of an Augusta bank on Saturday was taken into custody without incident at a convenience store in Augusta after law enforcement was able to identify him.
On Thursday, Augusta Police Chief Jared Mills said his department received “tons” of tips in response t0 a request for information, including several that were helpful.
“We had a lot that took us in other directions that we had to chase down, but there were a few pieces we received that we can link to this one, in addition to the detectives’ investigation,” Mills said. “Thanks from us to the public, for sure.”
The suspect, Joshua Brougham, a recent resident of Gardiner, remains in the Kennebec County jail, where he is being held without bail.
The gun used in the robbery has not yet been located, but Mills said is “hopeful we will find it.”
The armed robbery was reported to Augusta police Saturday morning.
At about 11:30 a.m., police say a man wearing a brimmed hat, a surgical-style mask and dark clothes showed a gun at the Camden National Bank branch at 21 Armory St. and demanded money. He was given an undisclosed amount of cash and left the bank before police arrived.
That day, Augusta police with the help of a police dog unit from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office, searched the area for the suspect.
Augusta police released a photo and description of the suspect on Monday, and asked anyone with information to contact them.
On Wednesday afternoon, Augusta police, with the help of the FBI, arrested Brougham, 37, and impounded the gold-colored SUV he was driving.
Mills said his department’s protocol is to notify the FBI in the event a federally insured financial institution is robbed.
