HALLOWELL — A crash Saturday at the intersection of Litchfield and Smith roads in Hallowell sent a 96-year-old Farmingdale woman to the hospital, police said.
Mary Cunnion was traveling on Smith Road in her Toyota sedan and failed to stop at the stop sign, colliding with a Ford 15-passenger van on Litchfield Road, according to Sgt. Christopher Giles of the Hallowell Police Department.
When police and other rescue workers arrived, they found the sedan in the woods with the driver trapped inside, and front-end damage to the van, driven by Thomas O’Connell, 66, of Wales.
“The biggest concern on scene was not only that she was trapped, but the vehicle was leaking fluids,” Giles said. “There were a half a dozen bystanders that witnessed the crash that stopped and immediately put themselves in danger to render aid to the lady that was trapped in the car.”
Giles said after the woman was extricated, she was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
O’Connell and his four passengers — two adult women, a 6-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl — were treated at the scene, but none was transported by ambulance to a hospital.
In addition to the Hallowell Police and Fire departments, the Manchester and Farmingdale fire departments and Augusta Rescue responded to the crash scene.
Giles said everyone was wearing seat belts.
No charges are expected.
