Representatives from Scouting Troops in Camden, Saco and Pittsfield attended a Leave No Trace Trainer course Sept. 10-11 in Rockville, Rhode Island.
“Matthew, Heidi, Ryan and I went to Camp Yawgoog in Rhode Island to take part in Scouting’s Leave No Trace Trainer course so we can bring the valuable training course to our local Scouting units and Scouting units districts here in Maine. This program allows us to have the opportunity to impart essential ‘Leave No Trace’ principles to educate troop Outdoor Ethic Guides and for Scouts to potentially earn the Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award,” said Shelley Connolly of Pittsfield, in a news release from Chuck Mahaleris, district vice chairman for the Kennebec Valley District of Scouting.
The Boy Scouts of America has embraced the Leave No Trace program as a core of its outdoor ethics.
Scouting has incorporated Leave No Trace at all levels of the program.
The next step in learning more about Leave No Trace for many Scouts and older members is earning the BSA Outdoor Ethics Awareness and Action awards.
Having local trainers in Maine is essential for providing the program, according to the news release.
