The State Fire Marshal’s Office said the cause of a fatal explosion and fire at a home in Stonington on Sunday morning remains undetermined.
Investigators spent part of Monday at the home on Fifield Road, but were unable to determine the cause, said Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety. Investigators were able to establish that the explosion occurred before the fire.
The remains of the home’s sole occupant, 71-year-old David Crutcher, were removed and taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for confirmation of the victim’s identity. The investigation is ongoing, but Moss said there is no evidence of foul play.
Emergency responders were sent to the home at 160 Fifield Road around 8:52 a.m. Sunday after receiving reports of an explosion at the residence.
