NORTH ANSON — A Chebeague Island man was arrested following a stabbing earlier this month outside a North Anson market, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
Jason Bushey, 41, was charged with elevated aggravated assault, Sheriff Dale Lancaster announced Monday.
Bushey argued with a 42-year-old man July 9 near the checkout counter at Vicneire’s Elm Street Market at 5 New Portland Road, Lancaster said.
Bushey left the market and waited for the other man in the parking lot, according to Lancaster. The argument escalated before Bushey allegedly stabbed the man.
The two men did not know each other, according to Lancaster, who has not released the stabbing victim’s name.
After being stabbed, the man returned to his residence in North Anson, according to Lancaster. The Sheriff’s Office was later contacted about a welfare check on a man who was injured and bleeding.
Deputies reportedly found the man had a puncture wound. He was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, and later to Portland for emergency surgery for a life-threatening injury, Lancaster said.
The injured man is recovering following surgery, Lancaster said.
At the time of the welfare check, the man was not clear on how he had gotten injured, Lancaster said, but further investigation revealed the fight at the market and identified Bushey as a suspect.
Bushey was arrested Thursday and arraigned the following day. His bail was set at $20,000, which he posted and was released Sunday from the Somerset County Jail in Madison.
Bushey is scheduled to appear Sept. 12 at a Skowhegan court.
Chebeague Island is in southern Maine, near Falmouth and Yarmouth.
