Pittsfield-area residents approved the school district’s $13.4 million budget in a referendum vote last week.
The three towns in School Administrative District 53 — Burnham, Detroit and Pittsfield — voted June 14 on the yearly budget referendum. The vote came out as 240 in favor of the spending package and 124 against.
Detroit (36 yes to 24 no) and Pittsfield (173-59) supported the budget, while Burnham residents opposed the spending plan, 31 to 41.
The $13.4 million budget is an increase of just under 3% compared to last year, but the amount each town is expected to pay will increase more than that. Because the state valuation of all three towns increased this year, the amount of money to be raised locally actually increased 4.3% over last year.
Burnham’s portion of the budget is roughly $1.3 million, an increase of 5.6% from last year; Detroit’s portion is around $990,000, which is up nearly 10%; and Pittsfield’s portion is roughly $3.3 million, the lowest increase of the three towns at 2.2%.
