Has the drought across Maine affected you?

Much of the region saw some much-needed rainfall Wednesday, but a big lack of precipitation in July and the first half of August has left much of central Maine in a moderate drought and some areas in severe status. Despite some rain, the drought was expected to persist.

The Portland Press Herald reported that at least 35 residents had reported wells running dry to the Maine Drought Task Force, which was 15 more than at this time last year. That number was almost as many as were reported at this point in 2020, which was Maine’s driest year in almost two decades, state records show.

About one third of Mainers are facing moderate drought conditions, which results in declining hay, grain and honey production, more wildfires, browning lawns and trees and falling reservoir and lake levels. Another third of Mainers are in extreme drought conditions, which also means air and water quality is poor and groundwater levels are low.
