Isaac Hayden of Whitefield has been named Capital Area Technical Center’s student of the year for 2022.
He attends Erskine Academy and is enrolled in the electrical program for the second year, where he has been a role model student. He leads the class when the instructor has had to be absent. He plays varsity baseball at Erskine Academy and is the team’s captain, according to a news release from the Augusta center.
His work experience has included working for a wood mill and for G.A. Doughty Construction, which builds houses on the coast of Maine. He is an anonymous do-gooder in his hometown, where he shovels snow for others and picks up trash on the side of the road without any need for recognition. He was a SkillsUSA competitor.
Hayden’s instructor, Mike Parent called him “an outstanding student academically and a leader in the classroom. He is my go-to person for challenging projects or group work that requires leadership. He has earned the respect of his peers. His classmates often look to him as the standard to reach for. Isaac strives for continuous improvement and ways to challenge himself.”
He has been hired by Sargent Electrical Company and is enrolling in the apprenticeship program through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers with the goal of becoming a Master Electrician.
Hayden will be honored later this month at a banquet hosted by the Maine Association of Career and Technical Education along with other students of the year from Maine’s 27 career and technical schools.
The center’s student of the year finalists included Zainab Al Braihi, Cony High School, Augusta, Early Childhood Education 2; Ella Schmidt, Maranacook Community High School, Readfield, Certified Nursing Assistant; Keygan Wyman, Cony, Law Enforcement Academy; Olivia Blake, Richmond High School, Graphic Design & Printing 2; and Emma Baker, Gardiner Area High School, Culinary Arts.
