SKOWHEGAN — An Augusta man was arrested Friday in Skowhegan on charges he assaulted his 3-month-old son, according to police.
Dakota Colson, 20, was arrested after Detective Sgt. Kelly Hooper of the Skowhegan Police Department secured a warrant for his arrest, Chief of Police David Bucknam said Sunday.
Due to the severity of the infant’s injuries, he was taken to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland, where he remained Sunday in the intensive care unit, according to police.
Colson has been charged with Class C assault on a child younger than 6 and Class A aggravated assault.
Colson had been living with his young son and the boy’s mother in Augusta.
The infant was taken for unknown reasons March 11 to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, according to Bucknam. An examination revealed the boy had been assaulted, the chief said.
Hooper was notified of the case, and her investigation later concluded Colson was the suspect.
The Maine State Police took Colson into custody Friday in Augusta, according to police. He was then taken to the Skowhegan police station, where Hooper processed Colson’s arrest before taking him to the Somerset County Jail in Madison.
Further details of the arrest were not available Sunday, Bucknam said, due to the severity of the injuries and the victim’s age. A judge has sealed the probable cause affidavit, which contains a summary of evidence and details of the arrest.
Colson was out on bail on a separate aggravated assault charge when arrested Friday. His bail was set at $50,000, but officers have filed paperwork seeking bail revocation, according to Bucknam.
As of Sunday, Colson remained at the Somerset County Jail.
