AUGUSTA — The Harlem Globetrotters will make their way back to Augusta for the first time since their previous visit was canceled because of the pandemic back in March 2020.
Their return to Maine comes after a two-year hiatus, but The Globetrotters are no strangers to Maine.
Maine is usually a stop on their tours, which go around the country. Also, president of the Maine Celtics, Dajuan Eubanks, was a member of the team after playing in college.
The team will show off their tricks and skills at the Augusta Civic Center on Feb. 8, and will have a show in Bangor the next day. For some fans, if they choose, can include a pre-show, access to the court where they can watch the team warm up and a meet and greet.
Player Scooter Christensen will be in Augusta Monday at the Boys & Girls Club of Kennebec Valley to promote the event.
Their show, The Spread Game Tour, has been “newly reimagined” according to the team.
The Globetrotters are known for their tricks on the basketball court and for “popularizing” the jump shot and slam dunk, but their new tour will introduce themes of social justice and an “interactive family experience.”
“The team is even more committed to bringing their voice to social justice conversations while inviting communities all over the U.S. to come together to recognize the power of our commonalities and celebrate our differences,” the The Globetrotters website says. “Devoted to being more vocal around activities, the team will dedicate time throughout the tour to recognize local heroes of social justice and lend their efforts to call for change.”
