AUGUSTA — The city will open a daytime warming center at the Augusta Civic Center Saturday and Sunday due to incoming cold temperatures and a forecast calling for wind chills as cold as 30 degrees below zero.

The warming center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the city-owned Augusta Civic Center, at 76 Community Drive, both Saturday and Sunday, according to a news release the city issued late Friday.

People using the shelter are asked to wear a mask, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status.

City officials recommend that anyone needing further assistance or other resources for shelter from the elements call 211 or visit 211maine.org.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory, from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday, warning of very cold wind chills of between 20 and 30 degrees below zero which the advisory warns could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
