A driver who allegedly led police on a high-speed chase down Interstate 95 in central Maine was arrested after attempting to flee officers on foot, according to Maine State Police.
On Wednesday evening Maine State Police received a call about a sedan driving all over the road, heading south on the highway near Pittsfield from a concerned citizen, said Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The vehicle was then spotted by a state trooper near Clinton, and a second trooper attempted a traffic stop near Fairfield when the vehicle took off at high speeds.
The sedan reached speeds exceeding 100 mph, Moss said.
The driver, later identified by authorities as Ramel J. Higgins, 28, of Bronx, New York, made several dangerous passes, Moss said. Troopers successfully used road spikes to stop the vehicle near mile marker 113 in Augusta. The vehicle quickly came to a stop on the side of the highway, and Higgins ran across northbound traffic into the woods, police said.
Higgins led troopers on a brief chase before he was apprehended on state Route 3 in Augusta, according to Maine State Police. He was taken to Kennebec County jail in Augusta and has been charged with eluding, driving to endanger, exceeding the speed limit by 30 mph or more, operating without a license and leaving the scene of a crash.
