Former Gorham High star Mackenzie Holmes has been recognized as one of the top NCAA Division I players in the country.
A 6-foot-3 junior forward at Indiana University, Holmes was named to the John R. Wooden midseason Top 25 watch list. Holmes is leading the sixth-ranked Hoosiers in scoring (18.1 points per game), rebounding (8.2) and blocked shots (1.9). She scored her 1,000th career point earlier this season.
The list includes last year’s winner, Paige Bueckers of Connecticut, three players from top-ranked South Carolina (Aliyah Boston, Zia Cooke and Destanni Henderson) and two from second-ranked Stanford (Cameron Brink and Haley Jones).
The winner will be announced following the NCAA tournament in April.
ST. JOSEPH’S 74, RIVIER 59: The Monks (11-1, 5-0 GNAC) closed the third quarter with a 17-2 run to open a 16-point lead and rolled to their 10th straight win, downing the Raiders (4-6, 0-3) at Nashua, New Hampshire.
Cassandra Stapelfeld scored 17 points to pace four players in double figures for St. Joseph’s. Kaleigh Walsh added 15, while Hannah Talon and Angelica Hurley tossed in 12 apiece.
Alexa Dufries led Rivier with 17 points.
(3) LOUISVILLE 81, PITTSBURGH 39: Emily Engstler had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Hailey Van Lith also had 12 points and No. 3 Louisville (13-1, 3-0 ACC) forced a season-high 35 turnovers in an rout of Pittsburgh (9-5, 0-3).
(7) TENNESSEE 73, (25) TEXAS A&M 45: Jordan Horston had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Tennessee (14-1, 3-0 SEC) took charge in the second quarter to beat visiting Texas A&M (10-4, 0-2).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
ST. JOSEPH’S 76, RIVIER 66: Nicholas Curtis scored 23 points and Griffin Foley sparked a late 9-0 run with six straight points as the Monks (3-9, 2-2) held off the Raiders (3-6, 0-3) at Nashua, New Hampshire.
Foley finished with 18 points. Ashtyn Abbott added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Nikolas Pignone and Miles Gillette led Rivier with 20 points apiece.
INDIANA 67, (13) OHIO STATE 51: Trayce Jackson-Davis had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Indiana used stifling defense down the stretch to pull away for a victory over No. 13 Ohio State at Bloomington, Indiana.
Jackson-Davis made 11 of 17 from the field for the Hoosiers (11-3, 2-2 Big Ten), who went on a 13-0 run while holding Ohio State without a field goal for more than five minutes.
Malaki Branham led the Buckeyes (9-3, 3-1) with 13 points, and E.J. Liddell scored 11.
Ohio State was held to 30.8% shooting and committed 15 turnovers, including five in the last 6:41.
Indiana shot 41% but made only 2 of 15 3-point attempts as it bounced back from a Sunday loss at Penn State.
