FAIRFIELD — There was a good, old-fashioned slugfest inside the walls of the Folsom Gym on Thursday night.
Up by five entering the fourth quarter, the Cony boys basketball team outscored Lawrence by a 23-15 margin, and left Fairfield with a 75-62 win in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class A game.
Cony (4-0) was led by Luke Briggs, who scored 21 points. Parker Sergent added 15 points, while Kam Douin and Dominick Napolitano each chipped in 14. Briggs, Sergent and Napolitano scored six points apiece in the final period to help seal the game.
“We just had to slow down,” said Briggs, a senior forward. “All throughout the game, we were just going 100 miles an hour. We just needed to chill out, make the right passes. Come the fourth quarter, we finally started to do that and it showed.”
The game was a back-and-forth battle throughout the first 2 1/2 quarters of play. Cony was not its sharpest with its patented outside shot, but made up for it with a strong, aggressive full-court press throughout the game, forcing several turnovers.
“I don’t love what we’re doing offensively,” Cony head coach T.J. Maines said. “I think we’re leaving a lot of points on the board, not finishing well. Defensively, I love the pace that we’re playing at.”
Lawrence (2-1) stayed cool and collected throughout the contest, using its strength in the paint and on the boards to stay with Cony. Foul trouble would prove to be a problem for the Bulldogs. Junior guard Conner Nutting, who scored nine points in the first half for Lawrence, gained his fourth foul with over seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, and would foul out with over five minutes to go in the fourth.

“There were times that we handled (Cony’s) pressure well and there were times we didn’t,” Lawrence head coach Jason Pellerin said. “We didn’t always find the open guy. That’s something that we’ll continue to work on in practice and try to get better at. But I love coaching these guys. They’re so competitive, they work so hard. They give everything they’ve got.”
Parker Higgins led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Cade Scott scored 12 points. Andrew and Matthew Trombley each added 10 points.
