In Augusta, the position of mayor has historically been nonpartisan. As I drive around the city, I’m struck by the fact that signs on personal property for Mark O’Brien often share the same lawn space with signs representing a broad range of political persuasions.
We’ve certainly seen and heard stories of other communities in Maine and throughout the country where the mayor has become a divisive figure. Mark will never be that person, as he is able to bring people of diverse viewpoints to the same table. He displays integrity, intelligence and diplomacy, and he has demonstrated leadership abilities.
As Augusta prepares to welcome a new city manager, it is vital that city leadership models the expectation of collaboration and respect. Mark has worked extremely well with outgoing city manager Bill Bridgeo, and will be a mayor who sets the tone and direction to lead our city in positive ways for the next several years.
Mark is not motivated by political aspirations, power, or recognition, but rather by a deeply held commitment to service. He wants the very best for the people of his lifelong community and will work to ensure that the challenges of poverty, mental health, substance use disorder, housing needs, and economic growth will be met with fiscal responsibility and compassion.
Whether holding public office or not, Mark has perpetually been at the front of the line when it comes to service, whether as a youth sports coach, school board member and chair, board member of the Augusta Food Bank, or City Council representative. I urge you to cast your vote for Mark O’Brien as the next mayor of Augusta.
