Lewiston High School graduate Isaiah Harris finished in third place in the second heat of the first round of the 800-meter qualifying at the United States Olympic track and field trials on Friday in Eugene, Oregon.

Harris finished the race in 1 minute, 45.25 seconds. By finishing in the top three of his heat, he advances to Saturday’s semifinals.

He started in the back of the pack, as he tends to do while feeling out the competition during the first 400 meters. Harris, who runs professionally for Nike, finished the first lap in about 51 seconds, and in fifth place, before starting to make his move. He tried to get to the front with 200 meters to go but was boxed in by four runners ahead of him, which delayed his final kick.

Harris was able to make his move to the outside with 100 meters to go and overtook Daniel Nixon and Erik Sowinski and finish in third.  Donavan Brazier (1:45.00), the 2019 800-meter world champion, and Brannon Kidder (1:45.06) also qualified for Saturday’s races, which are scheduled to be run at about 10 p.m.
