The Bakery Photo Collective and the Maine Jewish Museum are proud to present a Zoom talk at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, with photographer and longtime Bakery fellow Tonee Harbert to discuss his new show “Through the Static and Distance,” currently on display in the Maine Jewish Museum’s Jody S. Sataloff Art and History Pavilion. Register for the event at https://tinyurl.com/yeedrx83.
A developing series of haunting black-and-white images from New Mexico, “Through the Static and Distance” considers human intervention on the landscape. Any purpose imposed on the land leaves a mark which can show a past narrative. These signs/signals inhabit our everyday world, where collectively they can take on the surreal quality of a dream. In the New Mexico landscape, three marks of existence, from Buddhism, come to mind – impermanence, emptiness, and imperfection. Harbert uses a 1960’s plastic “Diana” film camera to capture scenes which resonate with his own experience of moving through the world.
Tonee Harbert grew up in Oregon and has lived most of his life in Maine. His photography has been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Portland Museum of Art, Farnsworth Art Museum, Danforth Museum of Art, ICA at Maine College of Art, and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. A recipient of a New England Emmy award, his work has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, and in books and motion pictures. He is currently based in Roswell, New Mexico.
The Maine Jewish Museum celebrates and honors the contributions and diversity of Maine’s Jewish immigrants in the context of the American experience. Through exhibits, programming, and dialogue, the Museum seeks to build bridges of appreciation and understanding with people of all backgrounds.
