GORHAM — Alexis Brown went 5 for 8 overall and was the winning pitcher in Game 2 as Southern Maine easily handled Western Connecticut State in a Little East Conference softball doubleheader Sunday, winning 12-4 and 6-1.
In Game 1, the Huskies (14-1-1, 6-0 Little East) scored four runs in the second inning and five in the third. Samantha Hauck hit a three-run shot and finished with four RBI, and Rona Scott drove in three runs.
Brown pitched a six-hitter in the second game. Lauren Liedemann-Smith’s two-run double broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth.
MAINE 3, HARTFORD 1: Kelby Drews hit a home run, Kya Enos and Keely Clark each drove home a run, and Kyleigh O’Donnell pitched a three-hitter as the Black Bears (6-12) beat the Hawks (3-5) in Orono.
O’Donnell struck out eight and walked one.
TUFTS SWEEPS COLBY: Colby (2-6) couldn’t take advantage of nine hits in Game 1 and committed five errors in Game 2 while being held to three hits, losing 1-0 and 8-0 to Tufts (5-1) in Waterville.
Amanda Cabral went 3 for 4 for Colby in the opener.
BASEBALL
ST. JOSEPH’S SPLITS WITH DEAN: Dylan Fournier had three hits and three RBI in the second game as St. Joseph’s (12-10, 3-1 GNAC) earned a doubleheader split against Dean (3-1, 3-1) with a 10-7 win in Franklin, Massachusetts, after losing 9-3 in Game 1.
Luke Stephens drove in two runs in each game for St. Joseph’s.
COLBY SPLITS WITH TUFTS: Jonah Katz drove in three runs, Caleb Jung hit a two-run homer, and Patrick McConnell, Brady O’Brien and Cabot Maher all had three hits as Colby (6-4) outslugged Tufts (3-1) in a 12-9 victory, earning a doubleheader split in Waterville.
McConnell and Maher drove in two runs apiece for Colby in an 8-4 loss in Game 1.
FIELD HOCKEY
MAINE 2, ALBANY 1:Â Poppy Lambert tucked in a pair of goals to lead the Black Bears (5-3, 5-1 America East) to a win over the Great Danes (5-3, 4-2) in Orono.
Tereza Holubcova and Brooke Sulinski assisted on Lambert’s second goal. Maine goalie Mia Borley made five saves.
VOLLEYBALL
SOUTHERN MAINE 3, NORTHERN VERMONT-JOHNSON 0:Â Sophie Lindsay led the way for the Huskies as they won their season-opening match against the Badgers in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-14.
Lindsay had 21 assists, nine digs, eight kills and two aces. Jamie Jarrone tallied five kills, two aces and two blocks.
