100 Years Ago: 1921
The Iocal Sweet Corn Growers’ Association will hold an all day’s meeting at Canton grange hall, Thursday commencing at 10 am. A picnic dinner will be served. The State Secretary of the Association, C.H. Crawford of Augusta, will be present.
50 Years Ago: 1971
The Lewiston Model Cities Committee last night voted 11 to 3 to continue planning on the controversial multi purpose center, The action was taken following a public hearing at which time opposition to the project was voiced by some of those present. About 60 were on hand, including the committee members and about 25 of them were Model Cities residents. Others attending the meeting were agency members all making a last pitch for the federal money allocated to the MC Agency. Richard Reid, coordinator for the education task force opened the hearing by reading some statistics. He said that during 1969 about 1,000 Model Neighborhood residents were surveyed and the needs mostly desired are tentatively planned in the center.
25 Years Ago: 1996
Kirsten Clark of Raymond, became the first junior to win the women’s combined title in the U.S. Alpine Championships at SugarLoaf/USA. “It’s great to be skiing in front of the hometown crowd, but I can’t hear anything on the course,” the 18-year old Carrabassett Valley Academy graduate said after winning the title with a silver medal in giant slalom. The U.S. Skiing reigning superstar, Picabo Street, was impressed. “She’s the brightest thing we have coming up,” Street said. The only other Mainer to win the combined title is Julie Parisien of Auburn.
