The Maine Legislature will be considering a bill that will allow people to register to vote online.
With online voter registration, eligible voters can register to vote through a website designed by the secretary of state’s office. The voter data is encrypted and then automatically uploaded to the state voter file.
In my town, we offer the convenience of 13 different online registrations and renewals that previously required a visit to the town office. It’s time we added voter registration to this list of online services. In addition to the convenience factor, it saves the state money by cutting down on printing and mailing costs incurred with paper registration forms. And security and integrity are maintained by encrypting voter data.
Forty-one states already use online voter registration. Let’s make Maine the 42nd. I urge you to contact your state representatives and senators and ask them to support online voter registration.
