FARMINGTON — Nearly 30 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center in an outbreak that began last month.
According to reports from the facility management, as of this week, 19 residents and 10 staff have tested positive for the virus. Orchard Park has been closed to admissions, visitors and all but essential vendors.
“So far, only mild symptoms are being reported,” according to a letter sent to staff, residents and the families of residents.
The first letter was sent Jan. 28, advising that a newly admitted resident had tested positive for the virus the day before, although that resident had tested negative prior to being admitted.
“Staff followed recommended precautions throughout the resident’s stay,” according to the letter, signed by facility Administrator Debra Chalmers, “however, as a requirement, all residents and staff have been tested and we will continue to follow the CDC guidelines until cleared.”
What followed was a series of letters advising residents and families that more COVID-19 cases had been reported at the home. At least five letters were sent with updates on the growing numbers of positive cases.
Orchard Park management said they are following guidelines from the CDC, continuing to conduct resident and staff tests while providing in-room activities for the residents along with meals and care.
“Staff and resident safety is our top priority,” Chalmers wrote on Feb. 6, “please know that we are working with the Centers for Disease Control, our local Emergency Management Agency, Department of Health and Human Services and North Country health personnel and we’re adhering to their current guidelines.”
