Portland police say a man was struck and killed Sunday afternoon by a train passing behind a home along St. John Street.
Someone walking along the tracks in the area of 400 St. John Street found a man lying on the ground and bleeding, and called police around 3:30 p.m., Portland police said.
Lt. Robert Martin, spokesman for the Portland Police Department, said Monday night that investigators have been able to identify the man, but would not be releasing his name pending notification of his relatives. Police previously had said they believed the man was homeless and in his 50s.
Police say the man appeared to have been hit by a train, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Several trains had passed that area in a short period of time, and police are working with Amtrak Police and Railroad Police from Pan Am Railways to determine which train struck the man.
“We are still working to identify the type of train,” Martin said Monday night.
Anyone with information about the man or the train that may have struck him is asked to call police at 207-874-575.
The Portland man is the second person to have been hit and killed by a train this month. On Feb. 13, Falmouth police said the Amtrak Downeaster struck and killed 62-year-old Lewis Bradley, whose most recent address was Portland.
Bradley was hit by the passenger train while he was walking on tracks behind the West Falmouth Crossing shopping plaza. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bradley’s niece said he was heading to a local pharmacy to pick up a prescription when the train hit him.
