The Maine Art Gallery Wiscasset will again provide a venue for promising artists from local schools with an exhibit beginning Saturday, May 4.
The gallery will be open weekends from noon to 4 p.m. until the closing day for the show, May 19. An opening reception will be held from noon to 4 p.m. May 4 at the gallery at 15 Warren St., Wiscasset, according to a news release from the gallery.
The old Wiscasset Academy building is home to the Maine Art Gallery Wiscasset, whose mission is to foster creativity and cultural expression in Maine. As an old school house, it is also an appropriate setting for this display of student art.
“We begin the season with an exhibit of the most original art of all — that done by children. We hope it will bring many children to the gallery and to an appreciation of viewing art in a gallery space,” said Marcia Sewall, chairwoman of the Education Committee for the all-volunteer Maine Art Gallery Wiscasset, according to the release.
Schools participating in the Youth Art Exhibit include Chewonki Elementary School, Coastal Christian Academy, Damariscotta Montessori School, Great Salt Bay Community School, Nobleboro Central School, Sheepscot Valley Children’s House, Southport Central School, Wiscasset Elementary School and Wiscasset Middle High School.
The Maine Art Gallery Wiscasset is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement and preservation of painting, sculpture and graphic arts through exhibitions, lectures, demonstrations, and educational programs for children and adults.
