A Waterville man remained at the Kennebec County jail Friday, unable to make bail on criminal charges following his arrest early Thursday morning in Winslow in a fracas that left him bloody.

Winslow Police Chief Shawn O’Leary said Kenneth Evers, 33, of Edgemont Avenue, Waterville, was arrested on Ginger Avenue just after midnight in a scuffle with several other people.

Evers is charged with robbery, three counts of assault, theft and criminal mischief, O’Leary said Friday.

He said the robbery charge, a Class B felony, stems from the alleged theft of a woman’s purse, which led to the fracas.

Bail was set at $2,500 cash. An intake worker at the jail said Friday that Evers had yet to make bail. Once he is released, he is to have no contact with the victim of the alleged robbery or with witnesses to the incident.

“It wasn’t a typical robbery,” O’Leary said. “It wasn’t like a purse snatching. There were several people involved.”

He said all of the parties allegedly involved in the incident are known to one another and that it occurred at a residence of one of them. The assault charges, along with the theft and criminal mischief charges are all misdemeanor charges.

“The guy was trying to get away and the other guy was trying to stop him,” O’Leary said, noting that Evers was injured falling down in the scuffle.

A witness statement obtained from the court also notes that Evers allegedly had a tire iron that he took from his pants and broke out a window in the front door of the residence. The other people involved in the incident suffered minor injuries, O’Leary said.

Evers has an initial court date of June 24 at Kennebec County Superior Court in Augusta.
