HALLOWELL — Registration is open for February and March art workshops at The Harlow, 100 Water St.
The lineup of classes includes wood carving, watercolor, mosaics and ceramics.
All materials will be provided unless otherwise stated. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
• Exploring Ceramic Cold Finish Techniques with Shawna Barnes is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. Those who attend can learn the difference between traditional ceramic glaze and cold finishes with sculptor Shawna Barnes. Hands on experimentation and exploration will be encouraged as the group will discuss the dozens of possible mediums that can be used as a cold finish on sculptural ceramics. Participants will be given bisqued relief tiles and/or ornaments to experiment with — shoe polish, wood stain, colored pencils, pastels, house paint and more.
Barnes is a ceramic artist specializing in sculpting animals with personality. She is based out of Knox, and is a teaching artist leader with the Maine Arts Leadership Initiative. The workshop is for ages 10 and older. Cost is $30 for members, or $35 for non-members.
Mosaic Picture Frames with Barb Loken is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 2.
Those who attend can create a fun and unique mosaic picture frame embellished with glass and tile. Loken’s retrospective exhibition 50 Years of Art is on view Feb. 15 through March 23.
The workshop is for ages 10 and older, maximum enrollment is 15. Cost is $15 for adults and $12 for children.
• Intro to Watercolor Landscape with Stacey Anderson will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9.
The workshop will focus on landscape painting. The group will work from photographs, so be sure to bring one along. Color, composition and use of materials will be the focus in this three-hour workshop for ages 10-plus. Maximum enrollment is 20 participants.
Cost is $20 for members, $25 for non-members, and $15 for children.
• Wood Carving with Rusted Pulchritude is planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23.
This introductory course will focus on how to make a functional cooking spatula out of green wood. Participants will receive hands-on experience with safe techniques using traditional hand tools and foundational wood carving skills. A set of carving knives are included in the course fee.
This event is hosted by Aaron Margolis and Deirdre McGrath, who create wooden wares and sculptures in their studio in Ellsworth.
The workshop is for adults, cost is $75, a $50 materials fee. Maximum enrollment is 8 participants.
Registration deadline is March 15.
