WATERVILLE — The Waterville Board of Education on Monday is scheduled to interview at least one candidate for the Ward 2 seat vacated last month by Susan Reisert, who was in the process of moving to Belgrade.
Greg Bazakas, a clinical social worker-therapist with a private practice in Waterville, was the only person as of Thursday who had submitted a letter of interest to the board about the seat.
Bazakas, who taught social studies at Waterville Senior High School from 1998 to 2005, said in a telephone interview Thursday that he has thought about serving on the school board for a while. He is familiar with the school system, he said, and has three children who either are enrolled in Waterville schools or have gone through the system.
“It has really benefited them and it’s an opportunity for me to be able to contribute back,” Bazakas said. “In my opinion, schools are a vital part of the community, so it’s important.”
Reisert, a Democrat, served four years on the board. Her three-year term expires in 2021.
The board is made up of seven residents from the city’s seven wards. It will appoint someone to fill Reisert’s seat until an election is held.
The meeting, at which the board also is expected to elect a chairman, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Mid-Day Cafe at Mid-Maine Technical Center. The board elects a chairman annually.
Democrat Sara Sylvester is the board chairwoman, having served in that position since 2015. She has been a member of the board since 2004.
The chairman on Monday will set the composition of board committees, including the policy and curriculum committees, according to Haley.
