ROAD RACING

Ben True, who became the first American runner to win the TD Beach to Beacon in 2016 and finished second in 2017, will return to the race this year.

True, a North Yarmouth native and Greely High graduate, leads the men’s elite field for the Aug. 4 race, which was announced by race officials Monday.

Molly Huddle, the American record-holder in the 10K, leads the women’s field in her Beach to Beacon debut. The women’s field also includes U.S. Olympic gold medal triathlete Gwen Jorgenson, who recently retired from triathlons to focus on the marathon. Caroline Chepkoech, who finished third in the 2016 race, will be among the favorites.

In the men’s field, True is joined by two-time Olympian Lopez Lomong, 2012 Beach to Beacon winner Stanley Biwott and Jake Roberts, who set the New Zealand record in the marathon earlier this year.

Reigning champions Stephen Kosgei Kibet and course record-holder Mary Keitany will not return to defend their titles.

BASEBALL

EASTERN LEAGUE: Andrew Ely lifted a two-run triple as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (44-48) opened the scoring with a four-run second inning on their way to a 16-2 Eastern League win over the Portland Sea Dogs (36-56) in Binghamton, New York.

Joey Terdoslavich launched a solo homer during the opening surge. Tim Tebow added an RBI groundout.

Levi Michael, Tomas Nido, Jhoan Urena and Cham Stuart each drove home three runs for Binghampton. Deiner Lopez knocked in both of the Portland runs with a fourth-inning triple. Jantzen Witte, who was returned from Pawtucket before the game, had a pair of singles.

REGENCY MORTAGE LEAGUE: Ben Sawyer hit a two-run single as Bruno’s (10-6) scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead over South Portland (7-3) for a 3-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader in South Portland.

Bruno’s won a fog-shortened five-inning second game, 9-3. Danny Tocci, Max Brown and Justin Donaldson all had an RBI for Bruno’s, which won despite managing only two hits.

NECBL: Austin Biggar’s single in the bottom of the eighth scored Nick Howie and John Rizer with the tying and winnng runs during the Sanford Mainers’ (18-12) 5-4 win against the Keene Swamp Bats (19-14) in Sanford.

Keene had taken a 4-3 lead with three runs in the top of the eighth.

Tyler Solomon homered for Sanford to finish with two hits and two RBI.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: Chris Froome believes the mountains will reveal the true Tour de France contenders as he looks forward to the first of three grueling stages in the Alps.

“I’m feeling good and optimistic about the upcoming stages,” the four-time champion said Monday, the Tour’s first rest day.

Froome, who is eighth overall after nine stages, is 1 minute, 42 seconds behind yellow-jersey holder Greg Van Avermaet before the first Alpine stage Tuesday.

HOCKEY

NHL: Nashville signed goaltender Juuse Saros to a three-year contract and forward Ryan Hartman to a one-year deal. Saros’ three-year deal is worth a total of $4.5 million. Hartman’s one-year contract will pay him $875,000.

n Center Adam Henrique signed a five-year extension worth $29.1 million with Anaheim.
