BRUNSWICK — The Maine State Music Theatre will kick off its 60th season June 6-23 with a dose of rock and roll with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, a historic quartet brought together by an twist of fate on a December evening in 1956. This meeting at Sun Records would become one of the greatest jam sessions ever in “Million Dollar Quartet.”
Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” will be staged June 27-July 14. Positioned in the third slot of the season, “Saturday Night Fever” brings the music of the Bee Gees back in full force July 18-Aug. 4. Closing the season on the Pickard Stage Aug. 8-25 is “Singin’ in the Rain,” adapted by Broadway legends, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, from their original award-winning screenplay for the stage.
In addition to its main stage shows, the theatre will offer a Monday Performance Series. This series also is offered as a subscription. First up on Monday, June 18, is “I Love a Piano,” the celebration of the music and lyrics of Irving Berlin. On Monday, July 30, is the 1960s, small-town America “Bye Bye Birdie.” Ending the season’s Concert Series on Aug. 13 is “The Best of MSMT,” a celebration of the theatre’s last 60 years as it welcomes audiences favorite Maine State Music Theatre performers, past and present, as they present a star-studded tribute to the past six decades of bringing “Broadway to Brunswick.”
Theatre for Young Audiences shows for 2018 include “Cinderella” on June 13 and 16, and “Pinocchio” on Aug. 20.
