Hannah Walsh, of Fairfield, a senior at Lawrence High School, has been selected to receive the 2017 Principal’s Award, Principal Mark Campbell announced recenlty. The award is sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association and is given in recognition of a high school senior’s achievement and citizenship.
Walsh, daughter of John and Annette Walsh, has distinguished herself as a leader during her tenure at Lawrence High School. She has maintained high honor roll each of her first 14 quarters while enrolling and completing honors, advanced and advanced placement courses in English language arts, mathematics, sciences and social studies.
Beyond the classroom, Walsh has been involved in a number of activities and clubs. Her many accomplishments outside of the classroom include soccer, indoor and outdoor track. Selection by her peers to be team captain for each area is a testament to her leadership qualities. She also was recognized by the KVAC for being a leader in the classroom with selection to the KVAC all conference Class A indoor track team 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Walsh has been actively involved with Student Senate at Lawrence. Student Senate members have been actively seeking ways to positively impact the culture of the building by discussing and asking administration to consider looking at factors that impact the students’ day while at Lawrence. As a result of her consistent efforts to make her school a welcoming environment for all, she has been recognized as a Student of the Month Award winner in 3 of her four years at Lawrence.
Outside of her school commitment Walsh went on a community outreach program, volunteering her time at the Portland Housing Authority, and Root Cellar. As a 2017 inductee in the Lawrence High National Honor Society Chapter, she has volunteered to assist the youth at Clinton Elementary. This past summer, she represented Lawrence at Dirigo Girls State where her peers elected her to the Senate.
Walsh’s future plans include studies at Brandeis University to major biochemistry for a pre-med track. Her career goal is to become a surgeon.
Walsh, Principal Campbell, and other award winners and their principals attended an honors luncheon in Bangor. The luncheon recognized these outstanding students with a presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler, both former principals and executive directors of the Association.
