If you enjoy reading those clever driver safety reminders and messages that motorists often see flashing on electronic highway message boards throughout Maine, you are being invited by the state to vote for your favorites.
Voting starts on Friday, with lucky winners receiving passes to the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, the Gray Animal Farm and to state parks.
“For the past two weeks, Maine Department of Transportation has been pouring through nearly 2,000 safety related messages submitted to the My Maine Sign contest,” DOT spokesman Ted Talbot said in a press release. “The messages are designed to fit on highway message boards that are displayed throughout the state.”
Talbot said state transportation officials selected the 60 best messages that are “funny, smart and clever, dealing with safety subjects such as distracted driving, speeding, tailgating, impairment and even eating while driving.”
Messages are divided into categories. One message under the category of districted driving reads “Put Down UR Cell Or U May End Up In One.”
Under the wildlife category, a message says, “Watch 4 Moose By Roads, Hitting One Isn’t Amoosing.”
And in the category of impaired driving, a message reads, “Sleepy At The Wheel? There’s A Nap For That.”
The public can vote for their favorites by visiting the state’s website at mainedot.gov. People cast votes by selecting a green light for their favorite message, a yellow light if you like the message, and a red light for messages you don’t like.
Voting ends Monday, April 30.
