AUGUSTA — The University of Maine at Augusta recently announced the 2018 UMA Student Art Exhibition is available for viewing through May 2 at the Danforth Gallery. 46 University Drive.

This show highlights the works of students in the UMA Art program. A reception, free and open to the public, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 22.

Students submitted artwork in various media, which they completed to fulfill class assignments throughout the year, including photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, design and other mixed media.

Honorary judges Bruce Brown and Judith Sobol selected pieces for awards that were carefully crafted, thoughtfully developed and designed, and that provoked a dialogue. The submissions were judged individually based upon technical execution and ideas, reflecting a broad range of media, as well as all stages of academic development.

“This exhibit was designed to showcase the diversity of study available through the UMA Art Program,” said Robert Rainey, UMA Associate Professor of Photography and Director of the Danforth Gallery, according to a news release from the gallery. “It is also a chance for students to see and learn from the work of their peers.”

Presenting in this exhibit provided students with a valuable hands-on experience in preparing for a show and the efforts involved in a public display. The show is also an opportunity for students to share their completed works with family and friends, as well as the central Maine community.
