Online registration for 4,000 slots in the TD Beach to Beacon 10K road race filled in 19 minutes on Friday morning.

Friday was the second day of registration, after 600 entries reserved for Cape Elizabeth residents were filled Thursday morning.

A lottery for an additional 1,950 race bibs began after the 4,000 slots available Friday were filled.

Race organizers used a new “controlled queue entry” system during registration to reduce technical problems that created frustration for many people last year.

This year’s race will be held Aug. 4 in Cape Elizabeth.

AUTO RACING

CUP SERIES: Martin Truex Jr. claimed the pole for Sunday’s race in Fontana, California, after a qualifying session in which 13 drivers didn’t complete a lap.

Truex won back-to-back poles for the first time in his career, following up his pole in Phoenix with another speedy performance.

He turned a lap at 186.567 mph in his No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota, claiming his 17th career pole on the weathered 2 miles of asphalt at Auto Club Speedway.

Kyle Busch was second in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota at 186.437 mph, and defending champion Kyle Larson was third.

Only 24 cars recorded a qualifying attempt after 13 failed to clear prequalifying inspection in time.

Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Chase Elliott were among the drivers who will start from the back. All four Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets didn’t turn a lap.

Kevin Harvick will start 10th as he goes for his fourth straight victory.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: In a rematch of last season’s final, title holder Real Madrid was paired with Juventus in the quarterfinals draw.

Madrid will travel to Turin for the first leg on April 3 against the Italian champion it beat 4-1 in the 2017 final.

Liverpool was drawn to host Manchester City, Barcelona was paired with Roma, and Bayern Munich drew Sevilla.

WORLD CUP: Brazil left back Filipe Luis is expected to recover in time for this summer’s tournament after undergoing surgery to repair a broken left leg.

Atletico Madrid said Luis is expected to be sidelined for about two months after doctors installed a plate in the left fibula he broke Thursday in the Europa League.

• FIFA has fully approved video review to help referees at the World Cup.

The last step toward giving match officials high-tech help in Russia was agreed to by FIFA’s ruling council.

The landmark decision came two weeks after FIFA’s rule-making panel, known as IFAB, voted to write video assistant referees into the laws of soccer.

Referees can call on the system to review and overturn “clear and obvious errors” plus “serious missed incidents” involving goals, penalty awards, red cards and mistaken identity.

TENNIS

BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Juan Martin del Potro defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semifinals in Indian Wells, California, for the first time in five years.

Del Potro next plays Milos Raonic, who defeated Sam Querrey 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

The other semifinal is top-ranked Roger Federer against Borna Coric.

MIAMI OPEN: Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from next week’s tournament because of a left forearm injury.
