AUGUSTA — After teetering on the brink of adding to the list of tournament upsets, the Hamden Academy boys basketball team decided to teeter no more.

The No. 1 Broncos, who haven’t lost to a Class A North team this season, turned a three-point third-quarter deficit into an easy 48-40 win over No. 8 Brewer in the regional quarterfinals Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center.

Hampden (18-1) will play No. 4 Cony, a winner over No. 5 Camden Hills earlier in the evening, in the semifinals Wednesday night. The Broncos and Rams did not meet during the regular season.

Brewer, which trailed by only two at halftime, took a 23-20 lead with a small five-point run to begin the second half to prompt chants of “overrated” from the Witches’ vocal student section behind the south end goal.

That’s when Hampden seemed to answer them. Emphatically.

The Broncos ran off on a 16-0 run which extended into the fourth quarter. Brewer (7-12) tried to rally in the final period, but the damage had been done as Hampden nursed a lead that grew to 11 points late.

Johnny Wolfington led Hampden with 16 points, while Ian McIntyre finished with 13.

Brandon Glidden scored 14 points to lead the Witches.
