Three people were hospitalized, one with life-threatening injuries, at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Thursday evening following a single-vehicle crash on River Road in Windham.

The crash led to the closure of the two-lane road for about two hours.

Sgt. Robert Hunt of the Windham Police Department said in a statement that a passenger, 23-year-old Maha Dawood of Westbrook, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was listed in critical condition.

The driver of the car, 25-year-old Mona Dawood of Westbrook, and a second passenger, 35-year-old Bassam Majeed of Westbrook, were taken to the hospital for treatment of what police described as being minor injuries.

Hunt said the accident took place around 4:25 p.m. near the Westbrook town line, about a quarter-mile south of the intersection of Anderson and River roads. River Road had to be shut down in both directions and did not reopen until 6:35 p.m., according to Hunt.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash, Windham police said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
