SKOWHEGAN — A resident of outer Malbons Mills Road was taken Monday afternoon to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor to be treated for injuries suffered when he was struck by a car as he walked near his home.
Deputy Chief Joel Cummings, of the Skowhegan police, said a 911 call reporting the accident came in just before 12:30 p.m. Monday from a point near the Cornville town line where the road becomes West Ridge Road.
Skowhegan police Officer Tifani Warren conducted the investigation and was assisted at the scene by the Skowhegan Fire Department and emergency medical services from Redington-Fairview General Hospital.
Cummings said a black 2002 Volkswagen Golf driven by a 16-year-old girl was traveling south on West Ridge Road from Cornville when she lost control on the icy road. The vehicle crossed the centerline and went into a snowbank on the northbound side of the road at the town line, Cummings said.
The car hit 64-year-old David Belanger, of 689 Malbon Mills Road, as he was walking back to his nearby home.
Belanger had hip and shoulder pain and was taken first to the Skowhegan hospital for treatment. He was transferred later to EMMC.
The vehicle had minor damage to the front hood area. The driver was not injured, nor was her 16-year-old passenger. They are not being identified by name because of their age.
The cause of the accident was cited as unsafe speed for the road conditions, Cummings said.
