ROME — State police have arrested a man on a charge of theft after he accepted a payment to replace a roof and then never delivered the service.
Police received a theft complaint on Dec. 27 from a homeowner on Watson Pond Road in Rome, according to state police. The homeowner reported that a down payment had been made for a new metal roof to two people, including Gary Page, 35, who operated a roofing business under the name Weather Tek. The down payment was made early in November, and the job was supposed to begin on Nov. 20.
After Nov. 18, Page, who lives in Skowhegan, did not make contact with the homeowner again.
Page ordered the roofing for the job from Lakeview Lumber in China. He returned a few days later and requested and received a refund. Page informed Lakeview Lumber that the homeowners in Rome had decided not to have their roof replaced.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for Page on a charge of Class C theft by deception through the Augusta District Court. On Jan. 8, Page was arrested and then transported to the Somerset County Jail.
Bail was set at $750 cash. Page was still at the jail Monday night.
