The Oxford County Retired Educators Association has donated children’s books written by Maine authors to all 21 libraries in the county for the past 10 years.

“Maine Books for Maine Kids” was initiated by Karen Ellis, of South Paris, and Elaine Lagueux, of Norway, who taught at the Guy E. Rowe Elementary School in Norway.

“The teachers were sad to see that local libraries had very few books written by Maine authors and decided to initiate the project at the retired level,” Lagueux said in a news release from the association.

Initially funded by individual members purchasing a library book, the project is now “a part of our yearly budget. We also have received a grant from the MEA-Retired to help us support this project,” said Ellis, according to the release.

A committee of OCREA members selects the book to be given. This year’s choice book is “Azalea, Unschooled” by Liza Kleinman, a free-lance writer who lives in Portland with her husband and family.
